'True Detective' season 3 news: Canceled or renewed?

The renewal of the series "True Detective" is still in question due to the negative criticism on the previous season.

There have been several speculations that the series will be canceled due to the response it received for season 2. With the first season setting a high expectation for the series, the sophomore season that followed did not live up to its hype. It was reported that while the plot progressed, the season did not leave viewers satisfied. The season finale received a decrease in viewership by 22 percent, compared to the viewership of season 1's finale.

Meanwhile, the series still holds a good reputation among viewers. However, if the third season will still show a decrease in quality, it can greatly affect the value of its first season, thus may put it in a bad light among viewers.

The first season of True Detective was one of the most successful shows on HBO, which will make it hard for others to top or even follow. Even the writer of the series, Nico Pizzolatto, mentioned that he doesn't think he can still bring the same level of story to satisfy fans again. He stated that he does not believe the series can even go past a third season.

Adam Arkapaw was replaced by Nigel Bluck as the director of photography for the series' second season. Bluck recently shared details about the process they did in shooting True Detective season 2. He said that it was an unusual experience for him because he did not receive prior access to the script beforehand. He said, "I just dealt with that by embracing it, letting it unfold in front of me and rock 'n' rolling with that... Different people saw different things at different times — there's a lot of paranoia about people leaking stuff. I guess with the show under the microscope, the media vampires were out there waiting to get their teeth into something as soon as they could."
