'True Detective' Season 3 News: Official Synopsis Revealed, Series to Be Set in Northwest Arkansas
"True Detective" will center on a "macabre crime" when the hit HBO series returns for season 3.
According to reports, the upcoming installment will be written by Nic Pizzolatto — the person behind all episodes of the show. At least one of the episodes will be under the direction of Jeremy Saulnier ("Green Room," 2015). Although there is no guarantee if the show will be back to its original dark roots, the newly announced setting for season 3 opens many possibilities.
"The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods," reads the official synopsis for season 3.

A large part of the show's timeline is reminiscent of the season 1 story arc, which starts in 1995 and continues to 2012. "Luke Cage" star Mahershala Ali has been tapped to play Wayne Hays, a Northwest Arkansas state police detective dispatched to investigate on the new crime.
"I'm tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala" and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier, Pizzolatto said in a statement. "I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story."
"Deadwood" series creator David Milch has been tapped to serve as a co-writer for the program. HBO brought him on to the show in March to further help tighten Pizzolatto's idea for the next installment.
While Pizzolatto was able to write a gripping first season, he had a short window of time to come up with the sophomore season after the show quickly rose to popularity. The result was a half-baked second installment that, despite featuring a promising cast, disappointed a majority of anticipating fans.
The third season of "True Detective" is expected to premiere next year on HBO.
