'True Detective' Season 3 Renewed or Canceled? Will Series Be Renewed?
When "True Detective" season 2 aired its final episode, many were unimpressed with the HBO series and the objective metric has the numbers to prove it. According to reports, the 90-minute season 2 finale only garnered 2.73 million viewers—a far gap from the ratings of the first season, which reached over 3.5 million people with ratings for the debut run's episodes steadily rising throughout the whole season.
Although the season 2's finale rating isn't that bad, the result of the ratings as well as the lackluster of the previous episodes have started speculations on whether the show will be renewed or be cancelled. Fans found the story to be moving too slowly and the occult theme that initially drew viewers in the season 1 was no longer there.
HBO clearly has a big decision to make about the future of "True Detective." However, the network seems interested in continuing the show despite of the performance it displayed through out the season two.
According to Yibada, the HBO president Michael Lombardo revealed during the 2015 Television Critics Association Press Tour that the network is open to the idea of a season 3 for the crime drama television series. They would want to continue the story but it depends on what Pizzolatto will decide on. Lombardo also defended the second season against critics and honored the showrunner as "one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today."
"I'm not calling him to say, 'Let's talk about Season 3 if you follow some rules of mine.' It's not a conversation I'm interesting in having or I think I need to have with Nic. I'm happy to be in business with him for a very long time," Lombardo added.
There's still no confirmation about a follow up of the series so fans will have to wait for more details until then. If ever the show pushes through, it should come by 2016 or even 2017.
