UFC 191 News: Johnson triumphs over Dodson

Defending UFC champion Demetrious Johnson beat top contender John Dodson in the MMA flyweight title bout at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Saturday.

Current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and challenger John Dodson headlined the mixed martial arts event, UFC 191, at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena, with Johnson defeating Dodson in Round 5.

The UFC 191 main event saw Johnson winning by unanimous decision over Dodson with a 49-46, 49-46, and 50-45 score from the judges.

Dodson initially came out strong in the first round with punches and body kicks, with several thwarted attempts at a takedown from Johnson.

In the second round, Johnson threw a head kick, but Dodson got in a takedown and landed some punches before allowing Johnson up. The reigning champ edged in a right hand, but landed on his knee, followed by a throw down from Dodson.

With Dodson faltering in his offense by Round 3, Johnson grabbed a leg and landed punch combinations, getting in a late takedown, but with both fighters coming to their feet at the end of the round.

By Round 4, Johnson took the upper hand with early punches, dodging Dodson's shots, and controlling the fight.

Round 5 saw Johnson getting the best of his challenger with some of his best body blows, taking Dodson down two minutes into the round, and kneeing Dodson's head. Even after Dodson got up to his feet, Johnson grabbed a leg and slammed Dodson down hard, then landed a straight punch. Both fighters clinched towards the end of the fight just 30 minutes before the round came to an end.

The Johnson-Dodson bout also featured a heavyweight bout co-main event between former UFC heavyweight titleholders Andrei Arlovski and Frank Mir, with Arlovski winning the fight by unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.
