UFC 193: Rousey vs Holm Main Card Preview
Gone are the days when fighting intended for sports were exclusive to men; on Nov.14, UFC 193 will attempt to break the all-time record for attendance in a mixed martial arts event with not one, but two highly anticipated matchups of female fighters.
No doubt UFC's brightest star today, Ronda Rousey, will again enter the Octagon to defend her bantamweight title against a very deserving challenger in Holly Holm. The event takes place at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Quite interestingly, the co-main event will likewise feature another battle of women fighters, with Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending her strawweight title against Valerie Letourneau.
It's easy to imagine women participating in full contact and combat sports like boxing, taekwondo, and even wrestling. But a few years back, it was kind of "too much" to see them brutally hurting each other in a mixed martial arts event, with all the kicking, elbows, knees, choking, and a lot of blood.
Today, it's quite different. As a matter of fact, UFC's biggest draw, Rousey, has the opportunity to break attendance records in her title defense in the land down under, something that male fighters will definitely drool over.
UFC hasn't been this bold and ambitious as of late. This fight card will be shown live on pay-per-view and will be held in a stadium that can accommodate about 70,000 people. The question now is if Rousey and all the other female fighters can actually fill it.
Unlike her previous title fights, this one against Holm should prove to be more of a challenge. The fighter they call as "The Preacher's Daughter" is an elite striker and boxer who relentlessly pounds opponents. The eighth-ranked bantamweight is a former professional boxer and kickboxer.
Co-Main Event
Lower weight divisions don't usually get that much attention and exposure except for hardcore mixed martial arts fans. But the fight card's co-main event, featuring strawweight champion Jedrzeczyk against Letourneau, promises war. The champion is rapidly becoming popular because of her Muay Thai style of fighting, characterized by inherent ferociousness inside the Octagon. Jedrzeczyk is fresh from two vicious and brutal wins. Although Letourneau is an up-and-coming fighter, the Canadian is actually on a three-fight roll, winning all of them by the distance.
It is for MMA fans to see if Rousey will stomp her class over Holm and if Letourneau in the co-main event can derail the vicious Polish champion.
