USA Swimming Olympic Trials Results 2016 [VIDEO]: Michael Phelps Sets Record for 4th Straight 200M Butterfly Trial Win, Heading to 5th Olympics
Olympic Medalist Michael Phelps Has Expressed Plans to Retire
Well-known swimmer Michael Phelps has broken another record in the USA swimming trials for the 2016 Olympics.
Another Record Set
The 31-year-old, who has a record of 22 Olympic medals (18 are gold), won the 200m butterfly category at 1 minute and 54.84 seconds. His 2008 world record in the same category was 1:51.51. He is off to the Rio Games this coming August with other qualifiers for the U.S. Team.
Consistent in 200-Meter Butterfly Race
Though he has competed in other swimming categories, the same report said that he has been consistent in the 200-meter butterfly category. He began competing in the said event in 2000 during the Sydney Olympics. Phelps also bagged the spot for the Olympics in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Life Struggles and Changes
Competing in the trials is a comeback for Phelps who had a rough life beginning in 2014. He was arrested for driving under the influence, causing a six-month suspension from competitive swimming.
"That was probably harder than any swim I have had in my life," Phelps said as he looked back on that dark part of his life and career.
He is certainly proud of how he has improved since that time. Last year, he got engaged to Nicole Johnson and they recently became parents to baby boy Boomer.
Plans to Retire
While he enjoys and finds contentment in competitive swimming, Phelps said this would be his the last time he will compete in the Olympics. According to NPR.org, the decorated Olympic swimmer is aware that his time to bid goodbye to the sport is soon.
What Will He Do After Retirement?
As he prepares for a life after the Olympics, Phelps said that he also plans to start a business and focus more on his foundation that teaches children about water safety. He also vowed to take care of his family especially his son.
"This is a new journey. I truly can't wait for the next chapter of my life. And I don't know the last time I've said that," the swimmer said.
