Youth beat out experience in Game 1 between the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames in the Rodgers Arena. Calgary will try to take a commanding 2-0 lead in Game 2 on April 17, 2015 at 10 p.m. ET.
Both teams started off slow in the first game, with both teams unable to make a breakthrough in the first period. There were a total of 23 shots, 13 by Vancouver and 10 by Calgary.
Despite the lack of goals it was an action-packed game, and the breakthrough finally came in the 13th minute of the second period when Bo Horvat scored off assists by Jannik Hansen and Alexander Edler. Slick passing from behind the goal to the front of Jonas Hiller led to Horvat's goal.
Calgary did not give up despite being down in the game, leading the Canucks 10 shots to four in the second period.
Things started to pick up in the third when the action was drawing to the close and the Flames were getting even more desperate.
They finally found the equalizing goal in the eighth minute of the final frame when David Jones took advantage of errors from the Canucks defensemen to laser a shot past Eddie Lack for the tie.
Vancouver tried to clear the puck twice but failed to get past the blue line, with Michael Ferland picking up the puck and driving it in front of Lack before handing it off to Jones in the last second for a low wrister which gave the goalie no chance to save.
With the clock running down, both teams were pushing for the final goal but it was Calgary's day as they took over with only 30 seconds remaining in the match. Gathering the puck from the side, Calgary moved the puck around while the Canucks' defense scrambled to get possession.
Sam Bennett fired a long pass that found Dennis Wideman far out and when the defense committed, he handed it off to Russell who fired in between three defenders and the goalie to put the puck past the line.
The win completed the comeback and gave the Flames a 1-0 lead in the series.
