Video shows chickens used by McDonald's beaten to death
A horrific video has surfaced showing chickens in a farm being used by McDonald's being beaten to death or living in despicable conditions.
The said video, which was taken by a hidden camera at a Tyson Foods farm in Dukedom, Tennessee, shows one chicken being beaten to death using a stick. Others can be seen limping with their broken legs in a very crowded pen, according to Metro.
An undercover PETA investigator filmed the horrific scene at the farm. The campaign organization Mercy for Animals publicized the video on Wednesday and called the chicken cruelty the "disgusting secret" behind the giant fast food chain's Chicken McNuggets, The Huffington Post reports.
The release of the footage comes in the wake of McDonald's vow to be more transparent in sourcing their meat. The abused chickens seen in the video were used by McDonald's for its Happy Meals, chicken fillets, and McChicken sandwiches, the report adds.
The birds in T&S Farm are seen moving around in what seemed to be their own filth infested with bugs. Some of the chickens are severely injured.
One portion of the footage shows workers trying to break the chicken's necks by standing on their beaks and pulling upward. The dead birds are then tossed into a nearby bucket, but one bird in the bucket could be seen still blinking.
McDonald's said the horrible treatment of the chickens is "unacceptable." The fast food chain said it will investigate the incident.
"We're working with Tyson Foods to further investigate this situation and reinforce our expectations around animal health and welfare at the farm level," a McDonald's spokesperson said.
Tyson Foods, a chicken supplier for McDonald's, also released a statement saying it had already ended its contract with the farm in Tennessee after they found out how the chickens were being treated there. The company also said it will not tolerate the issue and it is now looking into animal cruelty allegations.
