Volkswagen T-Roc Release Date, Specs News: Compact Crossover Coming to the US in 2019

A new compact crossover from Volkswagen will arrive in the United States in 2019. The German automaker recently confirmed that the T-Roc is scheduled to go on sale in North America after retail partners had voted in favor of its introduction.

"It was only yesterday that we decided on an additional SUV for 2019," Volkswagen chief Herbert Diess told reporters following the automaker's annual press conference last week, as reported by Automotive News.

Upon its release, the Volkswagen T-Roc will sit below the Tiguan and the Atlas, both of which will also be sold in the U.S. market. The Golf-sized T-Roc is also expected to rival the likes of the Nissan Juke.

However, at this time, no specific details for the U.S. version of the T-Roc have been announced. Specifically, the automaker has yet to decide which plant will build the upcoming crossover. It is also likely that the T-Roc will be renamed before it is launched in the United States.

The Volkswagen T-Roc was first introduced as a concept vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014. It was built using the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, which translated to a lightweight construction. It featured an aggressive design with off-road capabilities via an all-wheel-drive system but compared with most other SUVs, it was more practical due to a smaller footprint.

Other notable features included LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera and a 12.3-inch infotainment system.

The production version of the T-Roc was teased at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. According to AutoExpress, it has a boxier design compared with the Tiguan with square-shaped wheel arches, fuller-shaped C-pillars and a pronounced shoulder line.

The Volkswagen T-Roc is expected to be introduced sometime in August and will go on sale in Europe later in the year. Meanwhile, U.S. customers will have to wait until 2019 for the all-new compact crossover.
