'Voltron: Legendary Defender' Season 3 Release Date, Spoilers: Will Reboot Follow Old Show's Storyline?
After the shocking revelations doled out in season 2, which ultimately culminated into a decisive battle that left both Emperor Zarkon and Shiro's fates on the line, what's next for the Lion Force when "Voltron: Legendary Defender" returns for season 3?
Two major moments in the final episode of season 2 titled "Blackout" have set the pace for the next installment, which is scheduled to come out later this year. First, Shiro's disappearance right after the Lion Force's battle against the greatest enemy, Emperor Zarkon of Galra, has raised questions not just about his own fate, but also about the fate of Voltron itself.
Fans, who have watched the older series, are speculating that Princess Allura of Altea would step in and take over. As to which Lion she will be piloting, if and when this happens, still remains to be seen.
This possibility could also lead to a deeper exploration of the romantic relations between Allura and the Red Lion's pilot, Keith. This could get even more complicated by Keith's half-Galran origins.
What challenges will the two of them face, both individually and together, as they lead the team through their ongoing battle against the Galra Empire, while also trying to figure out where they stand with each other?
In an interview with IGN, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery said that while they intend to honor the old show in every way possible, they also do not feel trapped in its set standards. And only if it feels like the right decision to let Shiro go and put Allura into the Lion would they consider taking cues from the old storyline.
"But we don't feel like we have to follow that mold if that's not the right decision," Montgomery added.
The second biggest plot twist in the second season finale was the introduction of Emperor Zarkon's infamous son, Prince Lotor. His obsession for Allura makes the Princess of Altea his weak point both as a ruler and a warrior. As to how his appearance will impact the upcoming season is something that fans should watch out for.
In the same interview with IGN, co-creator Joaquim Dos Santos revealed that they saw in Lotor an opportunity to mold a cooler and more motivated version of an old character, whose storyline will play out rather differently from how his father Zarkon's tale was treated.
"Lotor was a huge fan favorite from the original series, and we really enjoyed him," Santos added.
Expect all 13 episodes of "Voltron: Legendary Defender" season 3 to stream on Netflix in September.
