'Voltron' Series News: Reboot Coming to Netflix June 10
Today's generation of kids will be introduced to the mechanized lions assembling to a giant robot, thanks to Netflix and Dreamworks, which teamed up to reboot the 1980s hit animated series, "Voltron: Legendary Defender."
In the just-concluded WonderCon held in Los Angeles, attendees of the convention had the privilege to be the first to witness the teaser of the Netflix reboot, and they couldn't help lifting themselves from their seats and giving the teaser their big round of applause.
The original "Voltron" series was based on the Japanese anime series and ran from 1984-85. The storyline featured five young men and the princess of planet Arus as they battled monsters and other villains in their individual giant lion robots that eventually form into a bigger humanlike robot. While it is true that the reboot of the "Voltron" will introduce some modern changes, much of it will be the same and enough to fuel nostalgia to the '80s kids.
"We're trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show," assures "Voltron" co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery.
Some of the positive changes that will be introduced in the new "Voltron" are its serialized form of storytelling and a backstory for each of the major characters, which aims at shedding light on how they became part of the Voltron team, according to the show's executive producer, Joaquim Dos Santos. Viewers can also expect humor injected in the characters as they take on the challenges that come with defending planet Arus against invaders coming from other planets, especially those helmed by King Zarkon.
"Voltron is nowhere near the scale of a Star Wars in terms of mythology, but it has managed to stick around in pop culture and became this representation of teamwork."
However, not all the 13 22-minute episodes will feature Voltron as some will focus on the backstory of the each main character or their sole adventure riding their mechanized lions.
"Not everything is solved by Voltron alone. Sometimes they need to beat something just as the lions. Sometimes they just do it as themselves fighting as men," revealed Montgomery.
"Voltron: Legendary Defender" is scheduled to make its Netflix debut on June 10.
