'War Machine' Latest News: First Trailer Features Brad Pitt

Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming film "War Machine."

The first teaser trailer features Brad Pitt in the starring role of Gen. Glenn McMahon, the "rock star" general and NATO commander whose reputation gets ruined by a magazine exposé.

"Our hope is that you're the man who will get the job done. You're the leader of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and you have spoken to the president once in 70 days," Pitt is told in the 30-second teaser.

Later in the trailer, a woman portrayed by Tilda Swinton stands up and tells him, "That, General, you must know, is a war you will never win."

The story of "War Machine" is inspired by the bestselling book "The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan" by late American journalist Michael Hastings.

According to Variety, the book is based on Hasting's interviews with Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was appointed to command the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan back in 2009.

"War Machine" is described as "an absurdist story for our times," and recreates the rollercoaster rise and fall of a charismatic, four-star U.S. general who takes command of NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist's shocking exposé. The film is part reality and part savage parody, thereby blurring the lines that lies between the two concepts.

Aside from Pitt and Swinton, the star-studded cast of "War Machine" includes Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Lakeith Stanfield, Will Pulter, John Magaro, Emory Cohen, RJ Cyler, Scoot McNairy, Alan Ruck and Meg Tilly.

The $60-million project is produced by Netflix and Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment. Ian Bryce and Plan B's Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Pitt serve as the film's producers. James Skotchdopole, on the other hand, serves as its executive producer.

"War Machine" is scheduled for release on May 26 on Netflix.
