Warner Bros. Greenlights 'The Fugitive' Sequel, Harrison Ford to Reprise Role?

Warner Bros. just gave the go-signal for a sequel to the Academy Award-winning 1993 film, "The Fugitive," giving rise to speculations Harrison Ford may return as Dr. Richard Kimble.

The third installment for "The Fugitive" is in the works, after Warner Bros. greenlit the project, highlighting the possibility original star, Harrison Ford may make a comeback to his role.

The first film, revolving around a doctor (Ford) on the run after being wrongly accused of killing his wife, grossed over $350 million in the box office and garnered six Academy Award nominations, with Tommy Lee Jones garnering a Best Supporting Actor Award at the 1994 Oscars.

Jones returned in the lead role a Deputy Samuel Gerard in the film's sequel, "U.S. Marshalls," chasing after escaped fugitive Mark Warren (Wesley Snipes).

While no word has yet been released whether Ford or Jones will return for the third installment, the soon-to-be-announced sequel will be produced by Arnold and Anne Kopelson, who also produced the first and second films, with the script to be penned by Christina Hodson, who wrote the screenplay for the Naomi Watts thriller, "Shut In."

The plotline for the upcoming sequel is set to take place a few years after the events of the original film, and production for the film scheduled to start next year, with a slated 2017 or 2018 release in theaters.

"The Fugitive" initially aired as a TV show in the 1960s, but gained international acclaim after its film adaptation opened strongly at the U.S. box office and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing, with supporting actor Jones winning the Oscar for his role.

If Harrison Ford agrees to star, the sequel will be his third resurrected franchise after over 20 years, together with "Blade Runner 2" where he will be reprising his role as retired police officer, Rick Deckard, and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," as an ageing Han Solo.
