Washington Redskins Cornerback Josh Norman Suffers Fractured Rib, May Miss Multiple Weeks
The Washington Redskins may have to play without cornerback Josh Norman for a couple of weeks because his rib injury appears to be serious.
The Redskins have confirmed that Norman has suffered a fractured rib and the timetable for his return is two to four weeks. He is considered week-to-week.
Norman sustained the injury when he tackled wide receiver Chris Conley in the second quarter of their 29–20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Monday. The Pro Bowler hunched over on the sideline after the play and he did not return to the game.
At halftime, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden had already noted that he expects Norman to miss at least a couple of weeks because of the injury, and there were also concerns about a possible punctured lung because he had difficulty breathing. Fortunately, it was just a rib and there was no internal organ damage.
"It got me on the side. I came in and got X-rays and saw one of my ribs had something done to it," Norman said, via the Redskins' official website.
Since they have a bye this weekend, Gruden says that there's a chance Norman may suit up against the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 15. But while it's possible that he may not miss any games at all, the Redskins are unlikely to risk the possibility of aggravating the injury by bringing him back too soon.
"There is a concern there. I don't know where it is, how severe the pain is for him, but when you have to play bump and run, you have to tackle and all that stuff, I think it will be a pain-tolerance during [the game]. We have got to make sure it's healed enough where he can play and be effective and not do more damage to it," Gruden said, via ESPN.
