Washington Redskins NFL Trade Rumors: Redskins Expected to Extend Offer to Chris Baker Once Free Agency Talks Begin
The Washington Redskins haven't exactly been the model franchise when it comes to negotiating with pending free agents. They have already botched contract talks with Kirk Cousins, but negotiations with another one of their key players have been going quite well.
Mike Jones of the Washington Post has reported that the Redskins have met with Chris Baker's camp and they had "encouraging" discussions. Jones also said that the team was expected to extend an offer to the defensive lineman on Tuesday.
Baker has expressed interest in re-signing with them and the team would love to have him back. However, the Redskins are not the only team interested in the free agent lineman. According to ESPN, at least six other teams are looking to add him as well. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts are reportedly among his suitors.
Baker has been one of the Redskins best players in the past couple of years and they should do everything they can to get him back in the fold.
While it's clear that the Redskins' defensive line has been terrible the past few seasons and a revamp is long overdue, many pundits believe the team should still keep Baker since he has been their best defensive lineman.
"Washington's defensive line needs a rebuild, the unit ranked near the bottom in too many statistical categories. But many observers of the team recognize that rebuild should include Baker, a guy that provides a strong locker room presence with his leadership and his levity," JP Finlay of CSN Mid-Atlantic said.
The Redskins have been all over the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons. First, it was the chaos surrounding the team's contract negotiations with Cousins, and then rumors surrounding general manager Scot McCloughan's job status started to spread like wildfire. A lot of people believe the team is in disarray right now, but they can right the ship by signing an important player like Baker.
