Washington Redskins Running Back Rob Kelley Day-to-Day With a Rib Cartilage Injury
The Washington Redskins were expecting the worst when Rob Kelley went down with a rib injury in the second quarter of their game against the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden even believed that the running back might have a fractured rib. Fortunately, the second-year pro escaped serious injury.
The team has announced that Kelley suffered a rib cartilage injury, and he's considered day-to-day. He hasn't even been ruled out of their game against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 24, but he will probably be a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
"We'll put the pads on and practice Wednesday and see how many guys can participate and go from there. Obviously, Rob Kelley is a tough guy. I think he'll try and play with that thing, but you never know how much pain he's in. We'll see how that rib feels," Gruden said, via the Washington Post.
Kelley had 78 yards on 12 carries before he was taken out of the game. Rookie Samaje Perine stepped up and carried the load for the Redskins after Kelley exited the game, and he finished the game with 67 yards on 21 carries. He should see a lot of action next Sunday if Kelley is unavailable.
Chris Thompson should get more touches as well, and Gruden is confident he can carry the extra load.
"Sometimes, you don't know where their stamina will be when they get 10 to 12 carries, but I think his stamina was outstanding. He ran with great pad level and got the tough, physical yards we needed," Gruden said, according to the Washington Post.
Meanwhile, tight end Jordan Reed is also considered day-to-day with a chest sternum contusion. The Pro Bowler suffered the injury in the third quarter of their game against the Rams, but he returned in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with six catches for 48 yards.
