Websites to Go Dark at 9:30AM ET for Sandy Hook Victims
More than 100,000 people and websites have pledged to go dark for one minute beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET in honor of the victims of Newton, Connecticut's victims.
According to Causes.com, users can sign up to "observe a moment of silence on Friday, Dec. 21 to remember the victims of Sandy Hook. It's time to do something about gun violence." The website urges people to "spend several minutes reflecting quietly on this terrible tragedy and take a five minute pause from all online activity."
Ron Conway is one of the people behind the petition/movement, according to CNN, along with "other big names including Ryan Seacrest, Jack Dorsey, Britney Spears, MC Hammer, Suze Orman, and Tyler Florence." All have pledged their support and hope that the moment of silence will also lead to more awareness about gun control.
At 9:30 a.m., several websites will suddenly go dark and post a green ribbon along with the words "We are observing a National Moment of Silence for the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy." It's unknown just what websites will be participating in the moment of silence or how it will affect Internet traffic.
Conway is one of the biggest backers of gun control legislation and signed his name to a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for gun control reform. CNN reported that the ad was run and sponsored by the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which consists of more than 700 United States mayors across the nation.
The group, which includes New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker, was founded after the Aurora, Colorado shootings. The group has been outspoken in its call for gun reform and is using the Sandy Hook tragedy to help raise public awareness and sponsorship for new legislation.
