What Is The Bible? The Word of God

Most appliances and devices come with an operating manual from the manufacturer that tells users how the product should be used, what its capabilities are, and how all of the parts fit together.

In the same way that these items have their operating manuals, humans have the Bible as their "manual" of sorts. The Bible was written by God so that we could live our lives in line with how He designed them to be lived.

The Bible is God's instruction book for all human life. It contains His commands, His laws, His precepts, and His will, written across 66 books. It also reveals His heart and His loving nature in its lines and pages. It is God's heart and mind, condensed in 1,189 chapters, divided between the Old and New Testament.

One of the most prominent people God used to write the Bible, the apostle Paul, tells us just how invaluable the "Good Book" is for everyone to live a Godly life:

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

One of the best descriptions for the Bible is given by The Gideons International, found in every Bible they give out for free:

"The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable."

"Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end."

Why does it have so many translations?

Perhaps you're wondering why there are so many Bible translations available in bookstores and online retailers. There's the older King James Version; easy-to-read versions such as the New International Version, English Standard Version, Modern English Version, and the Amplified Bible; and common-language versions like the New Living Translation, among others.

All of these versions attempt to capture the original meaning behind the ancient texts from sources like the Dead Sea Scrolls, all of them proven to be accurate. Since the writers God used vary in location, age, time period and perspective, you can read different kinds of content but all of them carry one single message: God's plan of redemption for mankind.

Should I believe the Bible?

The Bible contains God's very words, communicated through men inspired by the Holy Spirit. Many are skeptic about the Word of God, but the choice to believe is yours. It does not force you to believe God or what He says, but it does tell us the truth that believing or not believing has its rewards, and appeals to everyone to believe in God who has nothing but love for all men.
