Apple iOS 9 new features, release date news: Major updates expected
The new iOS 9 update is ready to be launched anytime today, and Apple promised that it will have more sophisticated features improved and new built-in apps.
iOS 9 will be available for upgrade for Apple users with devices that run on iOS 8, which is good news for those who own "older" Apple gadgets.
The over-the-air update features new emoticons like a burrito, taco, hotdog, popcorn, turkey, unicorn face, and cheese wedges. It will also have a "smarter" Siri, which will be more proactive in suggesting and adding new entries to the Calendar, or pulling up photos based on one's time and location. The updated Siri may even screen the numbers that call against the numbers that are stored, so it may be possible to block unwanted telemarketers, according to Tech Radar.
iOS 9 will also have a better Apple Maps, which can be tolerable even to those that are used to Google Maps. According to reports, Apple Maps will now include public transit directions.
iPad tablet users can now also enjoy the convenience of multi-tasking. Users can now use different apps using "Slide Over," "Picture-in-Picture," and "Split View" modes on their Apple devices, but only iPad Air 2 will have the Split View mode.
The new update will also introduce a new iOS 9 keyboard, which will now show the next word suggestions. The great news is that Apple will now allow the default keyboard layout to be customizable, and will now work with a third-party keyboard app.
iOS 9 will also have "Wi-Fi Assist," where it will automatically change to the user's mobile network whenever the WiFi signal drops. The update will have better security as well, since the passcode will now require six digits, compared to the four-digit passcodes before.
The new iOS update will only take 1.3 GB to install, unlike with iOS 8 that required 4.5 GB. iOS 9 will be available today, Sept. 16 through an over-the-air update.
