When Does Fall Start This 2017?

With shorter days and the distinct chill in the air, it is definitely time to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn with open arms.

When it comes to determining when the fall season starts exactly, the Telegraph reported that there were three ways to know. If one follows the meteorological calendar, autumn officially started on the first day of September. Under this timetable, the four seasons are split up into three-month blocks. For example, spring starts in March and ends in May, while summer runs from June to August. As mentioned, fall is from September to November, while winter is December to February. The setup reportedly makes it easy to compare and forecast seasonal statistics.

For those who follow the astronomical calendar, fall will officially start on Sept. 22 during the autumnal equinox. An equinox is when night and day are almost equal in length and is caused by the equator passing the geometric center of the sun, while the north and south poles align. The third way of determining when the autumn season will arrive is reportedly the easiest. Changes in the natural world like some of the trees shedding their leaves is a dead giveaway. Fall also comes with a vibrant show of colors, from hues of orange and red to purple and yellow. When the trees lose their greens, it is a sure sign that autumn has arrived.

The Brits refer to the season as "autumn," while the Americans prefer the term "fall." IB Times reported that the latter is a shortcut of the term "fall of the leaf." NASA, on the other hand, calls autumn "aurora season" because of the geomagnetic storms that give way to the brilliant showing of the Northern Lights. In Greek mythology, autumn is said to be the time when Hades kidnapped Persephone and made her Queen of the Underworld.

In a 2013 survey by YouGov, close to 30 percent of Americans chose fall as their favorite season.
