When Does Saving Daylight Time End and What Is It For?

For the United States, that time of the year when everyone turns back their clock for an hour has come again. The end of the Daylight Saving Time is on the horizon, and with it comes many questions. To help clear out the confusion, here is everything to know about the practice of Daylight Saving Time.

According to reports, Daylight Saving Time will end on Nov. 5, Sunday. At 2 a.m. local time, most Americans will have to set their clocks back to 1 a.m. For many, this means that they get an extra hour of sleep or free time. Regardless, the fall back of one-hour grants the U.S. some time to adjust to the rise and set of the sun during fall and winter.

Germany was the first country to implement the controversial Daylight Saving Time. They did so to save energy during the World War I, while the U.S. picked up the ritual in 1918 when it was passed into law. The dates are announced by the U.S. Naval Observatory, and the U.S. set their time one hour forward on March 12 this year.

Further reports reveal that Daylight Saving Time is done to maximize productivity during the morning, as setting clocks forward for an hour means that the U.S. population is less likely to sleep through the morning. It also allows a household to save on electricity, as they sleep an hour earlier. Furthermore, while there is some confusion on the name, it is not Daylight Savings Time.

Although most of the U.S. concur with the Daylight Saving Time ritual, some states are considering on extending it all year round, such as Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Arizona and Hawaii go about their business as usual, without setting the clock back for one hour. There is still much controversy on the tradition, but for now, Americans are advised to set the clock back for one hour before they go to sleep on Sunday.
