A Whole New Norman Comes in "Bates Motel" Season 5
While there has yet to be an official release date for the next season of "Bates Motel" Season 5, we look into the conclusion of "Bates Motel" Season 4 and how it showed a tragic ending when Norman performed a daunting task.
Mother and Son
The relationship between Norman (Freddie Highmore) and Norma (Vera Farmiga) has been rocky throughout the most recent season of "Bates Motel." In the beginning, Norma was seen having a strong hold on Norman, making the latter constantly dependent on her.
However, the development of their relationship presented an interesting turn of events. "Bates Motel" Season 4 showed Norman asserting more power over his mother, with his mental instability also took a turn for the worst. Therefore, the ending of Season 4 showed Norman trying to gain control over his mother, by attempting a murder-suicide together.
Fans saw Norman organizing a gas leak that is aimed to kill him and his mother. However, Sheriff Romero got Norman just in time. Unfortunately, he was not able to save Norma. Her death broke the hearts of fans, as it was an unexpected death.
Freddie Highmore on the Finale
Highmore stated that in order to stay faithful to the classic "Psycho" film, the series had to present the death of Norma. While the death of Norma was inevitable, many were curious to see how Norman was going to kill his own mother. With that, the death presented left fans surprised and shocked.
Highmore was able to share his sentiments about the Season 4 finale. In a web chat, he expressed his liking towards how the season ended. He said that it was a fantastic payoff for how the story was set up.
He also explained that it was a fitting conclusion to Norma and Norman's relationship.
He said, "They're both just so broken and at their lowest point that he's going to do what he believes is right. It's a last act of love for the two of them."
What's In Store For Norman
Highmore also explained that he is constantly challenged with portraying the role of Norman. He said that it was difficult to play Norman in a sympathetic way. In the previous season, his mother has constantly been the source of his sympathy.
Now that Norma is dead, he explained that the upcoming season will present a new side to the character.
He said, "As long as we know what's guiding Norman, what's going on deep inside, then we can't help but feel for him because, in the end, he's just a boy who wants his mother."
With that, fans are waiting to see just how the final season of "Bates Motel" will end up. While Highmore did not reveal any specific plot lines for the upcoming season, he teased that it will be an exciting season.
