Who Is Jesus Christ? A Man, A Savior, The Son of God

Jesus Christ is undoubtedly the only begotten Son of God (see John 3:16). The Bible lists for us the many names and titles that Jesus has, ranging from Genesis to Revelation, yet many don't know Him. Who is He really?

A real man

While many seem to question God's existence, no one appears to ask if Jesus Christ was a real person in history. In fact, it is generally accepted in different faiths that Jesus really existed. The truth is Jesus was a real man – as real as any person could be.

The Bible tells us that Jesus was born to a virgin mother named Mary (Luke 1:26-38). Many are skeptical as to how that could happen, but that was prophesied centuries ago through the mouths of prophets and by angels (see Isaiah 7:14). Although the conditions were supernatural, Jesus was indeed born a real human.

A real God

Jesus was not just a man. While He was fully human, He also is fully God. Jesus is revealed as the Son of God, most notably to Peter, one of His disciples who, after seeing Him work the works of God, saw Him as "the Christ, the Son of the living God." (see Matthew 16:13-20; Mark 8:27-30)

Jesus belongs to the Trinity, co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit but different in role and person (see John 10:30; 1 John 5:6). He's more than just a good man, more than a prophet, more than a great teacher, more than a wise man. He's God.

A real friend

Although He is holy and righteous, He is loving as well (see 1 John 4:8-10). He reached out to everyone, especially the sick (see Luke 5:31), the oppressed, and the condemned by society. He reached out to tax collectors hated by many (see Mark 2:13-17); was patient with His rag-tag group of disciples composed of various (stubborn) people (see Mark 9:15-19; John 13:1-17); conversed with both the learned and the unlearned (see John 3:1-21; Acts 4:13); spent time revealing God's love to all sorts of people (see John 14:8-11); forgave repentant sinners caught in the act (see Luke 5:32; John 8:11); and did not reject anybody who came to Him in search of God (see John 6:37).

For being the man that He is, He is known as the "Friend of sinners" (see Matthew 11:19).

A real Saviour

Jesus is more than just a good man who did good works. He is the Saviour of the world, the only one sent to be the "propitiation" for our sins (1 John 2:2). While men can work to end slavery, only Christ is able to end our slavery to sin. While doctors and nutritionists can help us live longer lives, Christ alone can guarantee us a life that will never end (see Luke 23:43).

Only Christ is able to save us fully, and He did through His suffering and death on the cross (see Isaiah 53:5). Only He can give us eternal life, and His resurrection from the dead assures us of that. (see Romans 4:25)

He loves you

If there's anything you should remember after reading this short introduction to the King of kings and Lord of lords (see Revelation 19:16), it's the fact that He died for you because He wants you to have the chance to be forgiven of your sins and become a child of God. He did not stay dead, however: He rose from the grave, and is waiting for you to respond to His finished work of giving you the way back to God.

Take His offer. He loves you so much.
