Windows 10 Out by July 29: How Much Will It Cost?
Those who have been waiting for Microsoft's last OS, Windows 10 can mark the date on their calendars - the new OS will be available for download on July 29. The official announcement was made on the Windows blog by Microsoft's personal digital assistant, Cortana. The announcement said, "Windows will be available on July 29 but you can reserve a copy now. Can't wait to be in your PC."
The official announcement comes after a swirl of rumors online said that the new OS will be available on August 31. What is more interesting is the rumored pricing of the software. According to an online retailer shop, Windows 10 Home Edition will retail for $110, while Windows 10 Pro Edition will go for $150. Screenshots of the pricing were also provided in the report.
In earlier reports, Microsoft has repeatedly said that Windows 10 will free offered for free to owners of previous OS versions, namely legitimate users of Windows 7, 8.1 and Window Phones will be able to get a free upgrade. Microsoft has not yet confirmed if this is indeed the correct pricing.
If the above pricing is true however, this may also be an indication that the new OS may still cost everyone something. Microsoft has been slow to reveal the details of the free upgrade program -- it now maintains that the free upgrade will be available to those with "qualified devices."
"It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. The availability of the Windows Phone upgrade may vary by OEM, mobile operator, or carrier," Microsoft said in a statement.
According to another report in Wired, the new OS is set to reach 190 countries in 111 languages. It has been built to "run on an unprecedented array of machines, which "includes desktops, laptops, phones, and tablets, 'Internet of Things' devices that power homes and business offices, and computer servers running in the massive data centers that underpin the world's Internet services." However, the version that will be shipping on July 29 will be initially for desktops, laptops, and tablets.
