Windows 10 Release Date, Features News: What to Expect in Latest Windows OS

Windows 10 is coming this summer 2015, and based on Microsoft's recent Build 2015 conference, it's bringing some interesting new features to the operating system.

Microsoft has decided to skip a number for their new version of the operating system, having released Windows 8 and 8.1 previously.

TechRadar rounds up the information about the upcoming operating system in a report. In terms of features, although the Build 2015 did not provide that much detail, the following takeaways were revealed. Microsoft had announced that Windows 10 is already available on the Raspberry Pi 2 micro computer and the Intel Minnowboard Max. Windows 10 was customized so that it will run on these tiny machines thus this version was named Windows 10 IoT Core. Microsoft at this point, invited users to try out the new OS on these devices and provide them feedback.

In an interesting demonstration, Microsoft also showed it's Machine Learning and face recognition platforms, which may be part of the Windows 10 package. Another feature that was shown was the new Windows 10 browser called Edge. The report notes that after some hands on time, the new browser needed a lot of work and was missing some of the "fancy features" that were earlier revealed.

Windows 10, as confirmed by its EVP for Operating Systems Terry Myerson, will supports apps that have been written for both iOS and Android.

In terms of the OS interface, a few of the significant changes is the animated Live Tiles in the Start menu and the lock screen which will now have a Spotlight feature which is a "more service-driven, personalized and lively take on the lock screen." Spotlight will also suggest apps and tools that the user may not have used yet. One such app is Cortana, which is the voice-based virtual assistant of Microsoft.

When asked about the Windows 10 release date, Microsoft only revealed that it will be "available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages." The new OS will be free for one year for Windows 7 and 8.1 users, but no word on pricing for users of older versions of the OS.
