Windows 9 Release Date Update: Microsoft to Preview Windows 9 September 30

Microsoft is set to preview its latest desktop OS, Windows 9, at an event later this month.

Invitations which were sent out for an event in San Francisco on Sept. 30 will see the discussion of the software's future. The event will be led by Microsoft executives Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson. It was also reported that an early "Windows Technical Preview" will also become available for businesses and developers to test out.

As of now, details about the new operating system have been kept under wraps, but the tech world is abuzz with rumors about Windows 9.

Leaked screenshots of a preview of the OS shows an upgraded Start menu, among others. Desktop users who miss the classic Start menu will have it back in Windows 9, which means it will be popping up in the bottom-left corner instead of taking over the whole screen just like it does in Windows 8.

There are also talks that the expanded Start menu could take over the entire Start screen for tablets and other smaller touchscreen devices where the OS will be installed.

Meanwhile, Winbeta reports that Microsoft will do away with the Charms bar—the menu that pops in from the right with buttons like search, share, start, and settings.

Another rumor says that Microsoft is still going to push through with its plan to have one operating system running across phones, tablets, and PCs. But with Windows 9, it is possible that the company will have a separate smartphone and tablet version which will emphasize the modern interface and Windows Store apps.
