Woman Pregnant with Brother's Twins After Sister-in-Law's Emergency Hysterectomy
It may sounds like a familiar storyline from the hit series "Friends," but for Tiffany Burke and her brother, James Lucich, it is very real. Burke is carrying her brother's twins after his wife was forced to undergo an emergency hysterectomy.
Natalie Lucich was forced to have the life-saving procedure after giving birth to her son, Hunter. That meant she would never again be able to carry her own children, and Burke immediately volunteered to be a gestational surrogate for her brother and sister-in-law.
Although there was an initial hesitation on Natalie's part, she finally agreed to her sister-in-law's offer, especially after looking online for a potential surrogate.
"What if the surrogate drank, or smoked, or threw herself down the stairs? How do you trust someone like that with your baby? No way, no WAY!" Burke wrote on her family's blog. "A belly for me, a baby for you."
That's when the family finally agreed to work together to bring more children into the world. Using James' sperm and Natalie's previously frozen eggs, doctors were able to successfully implant four embryos, which led to the twins that Tiffany is now carrying.
"This is in no way, shape or form, incest," Natalie posted on her blog. "As an interesting side note, our situation is even more different since James and Tiffany were both adopted at birth, from different parents. They are not even blood related, although it would not matter if they were. Tiffany would have done this for her biological brother as well."
Even though adoption was considered, the family decided the right thing for them was surrogacy.
"When my husband and I told everyone we wanted to have another baby, no one said, 'You already have a son, you should be grateful for that.' We conceived naturally and no one batted an eye, our second son was welcome with open arms and no judgment, so why is this any different?" Burke posted.
According to the family blog, the Burkes and Lucichs have gained a lot of attention for their unique story. The two families are also filming a documentary about their experience and journey.
