'Wonder Woman 2' News, Release Date: 'The Expendables' Writer Tapped to Co-Write

"The Expendables" and "Godzilla" writer Dave Callaham is joining Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns in writing the "Wonder Woman" sequel. Callaham was brought into the fold by Jenkins herself, who has worked with him previously.

According to reports, the decision to include Callaham in the writing team for "Wonder Woman 2" came shortly after Jenkins agreed on a deal with Warner Bros. to co-write, produce and helm the upcoming sequel. The first movie earned $816 million at the global box office and received generally favorable responses from both critics and fans.

Since the success of the first "Wonder Woman" movie, Warner Bros. has apparently used the popularity of the character to their advantage, giving her an expanded role in the marketing for the upcoming DC movie "Justice League." Planning for the "Wonder Woman" sequel is also ongoing, with Jenkins confirmed to return to direct and Gadot to reprise her role as the titular character. The director reportedly started working on the new story with DC Films head Johns before even signing the contract with Warner Bros. to helm the second movie.

Before tapping Callaham to co-write, she had previously worked together with him on "Jackpot." Unfortunately, the project fell through when Jenkins started to take over "Wonder Woman." It was reportedly because of the fun times they shared in "Jackpot" that the director decided to include Callaham into the DC fold.

As of now, the storyline of "Wonder Woman 2" is still very much a secret. However, Jenkins previously hinted of a possible time jump from the first movie, which was set in Europe during World War I. According to her, the sequel might take place in America during the Cold War.

"Wonder Woman 2" is expected to hit theaters on Dec. 13, 2019. In the meantime, "Justice League" will hit U.S. movie theaters on Nov. 17.
