'Wonder Woman' Movie Release Date, Cast and Plot News: Toy Fair Offers First Look at Ares; David Thewlis to Portray Role?

Back in November, it was announced that David Thewlis is going to be a part of the upcoming "Wonder Woman" standalone film. However, the role he will play in the film remains under wraps. This week, fans got a bit more insight into his rumored role. Recent clues hint that the "Harry Potter" star will play the role of the main antagonist, Ares.

Recently, Twitter user Stitch Kingdom posted a photo of the DC Multiverse line of toys at the New York Toy Fair. The lineup features characters from the "Wonder Woman" film, including Ares. In the photo, Ares looks nasty and vicious, has a large physique and is among the characters at the center of the display case.

According to Collider, Thewlis may portray Ares via a mixture of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects. While the creators of the film have not yet confirmed the news, speculations are rife that he will go full villain in the movie.

Last month, it was revealed that Ares will be the big bad in the film. In the comics, Ares is the god of war who is after the scientific formulas for a kind of gas that has the potential to annihilate humanity. These formulas are in the hands of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who is saved by Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) after he drowns in the ocean.

Meanwhile, the synopsis for "Wonder Woman" reads: "Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers — and her true destiny."

"Wonder Woman" is set to hit theaters on June 2.
