WWE Rumors 2016: Divas Title Gone, to Be Replaced by New Women's Championship

The WWE had a major announcement before the start of WrestleMania 32 last Sunday, revealing that the long-time running Divas Championship has been officially retired, paving the way for a new women's championship.

The announcement was made by one of the greatest woman champion in the history of wrestling, Hall of Famer Amy Dumas (aka Lita). This is a huge development for the WWE since the women's championship has been in existence for almost half a century already, popularizing several wrestling greats including Lita herself, Alundra Blayze, Wendi Richter, Fabulous Moolah, and Sable. Back in 2010, the women's title renamed into Divas, which in turn became the main championship contested by women in the WWE.

The commissioning of a new title belt, as reported by Wrestling Inc., also means that the Divas division will no longer exist and will instead be replaced by the new women's division. Technically, the women's division isn't really new since it already existed before the merger with the Divas title in '10. In essence, it is merely making a comeback.

Charlotte wins first-ever Women's Championship

Technically the champ, Charlotte took the challenge of defending her title against two of the most prolific women wrestlers in the WWE in Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch. The Triple Threat match last Sunday was a highly anticipated one, but many fans thought either Banks or Lynch would go on to win the new title, but Charlotte didn't back down against two opponents.

The Bleacher Report provided that both losing fighters will still be the top contenders of the new championship, but it should pretty interesting to see how Bayley's inclusion will affect the scenario in the upcoming matches in Raw. These four women have significantly altered the perception of women participating in wrestling, and without them four, there would never be this much excitement in women's wrestling.
