'X-Men: Apocalypse' News: Film to Feature Magneto and Mystique Romance
Previous "X-Men" movies have taken on the subject of romance in different ways. There was the love that Wolverine had for Jean Grey, who obviously has feelings for him except that she's currently in a relationship with Cyclops. Then there was Rogue, whose powers kept her from touching the man she loves.
Now, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter claims that the upcoming film, "X-Men: Apocalypse," will place the Magneto and Mystique romance "front and center." It is reportedly being done to take advantage of Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence's star power.
Since Fassbender and Lawrence starred in their first X-Men film in "First Class," their careers have skyrocketed as Lawrence took on the lead role for the "Hunger Games" series and won an Oscar since then, while Fassbender garnered critical acclaim for his roles in "12 Years A Slave" and "Shame."
The "X-Men" films have portrayed the relationship between the two mutants in varying ways. In the first three films, they were partners in the fight against humankind until Mystique lost her powers, and Magneto lost interest in her. In "X-Men: First Class," Magneto taught Mystique how to see her mutation from a different view, and in "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the two of them found themselves as enemies, though their intentions are quite similar.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" is being viewed as the conclusion to the story that began in "First Class." According to Cinemablend, nine years will have passed between "Days of Future Past" and "Apocalypse," and at this point it is unclear whether the two characters have seen each other during that time. The last time they saw each other, Mystique stopped Magneto's assassination plan, so it's interesting how the romance storyline will proceed.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" premieres in theaters on May 27, 2016.
