'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Update: Film Director Says Female Characters Gets The Center Stage
The female characters will be given the spotlight in "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," reports claimed.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming film's director and scriptwriter Simon Kinberg revealed that the plot will center on Sophie Turner's character Jean Grey, who is also known as the Dark Phoenix. But aside from Jean, the story will also evolve around the other female characters of the film. This includes Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique as well as Jessica Chastain's mysterious evil character named Lilandra with shape-shifting powers. Lilandra will reportedly do everything that she can to capture and kill Phoenix.
"I really wanted to acknowledge the strength of the women in the comic and in the actresses that we have and the central storyline demands it," Kinberg stated.
Turner, on the other hand, believed that the upcoming film features an exciting change in superhero movies since it will focus on its female characters. "I feel like this movie is a revelation because of it being like a drama but the hero is a female and she's also the villain. It really is about her relationships with the females in the film, especially Jessica Chastain's character," she also said.
Chastain, on the other hand, admitted that she became interested in the film because of its strong female representation.
The film, which serves as the sequel to the 2016-released "X-Men: Apocalypse," was reportedly taken from the storyline of "The Dark Phoenix Saga." It also stars James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Kodi Smit-McPhee as the Nightcrawler, as well as Evan Peters as Quicksilver. The film will also star Olivia Munn as Psylocke as well as Daniel Cudmore and Lamar Johnson in still undisclosed roles.
The "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" will be released in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
