Xiaomi Launches Smartwatch Built for Kids
One of China's biggest electronics and gadget companies, Xiaomi, made an unexpected announcement by unveiling a smartwatch like no other, and they're calling it the "Mi Bunny." As the code name suggests, it's literally a watch designed for kids, but is it really for them?
By looking at the features, it looks more like a good gear for parents who want to improve on how they handle their kids. Although most smartwatches in the market are highlighted by health and fitness features as well as entertainment functionality, this one focuses on safe parenting instead.
One feature allows kids to make phone calls to mom and dad by simply pushing a single button, and it does not need to pair with another phone or GSM device because it has its own SIM slot. Aside from making phone calls, there's also a panic button where a notification is sent to the parents with the help of GPS. The watch is also water resistant and comes with a sufficient 300 mAh battery that can last up to six days.
But perhaps the best thing about this watch from the Chinese brand is its price. With a starting price of ¥299 (slightly above $45), it's obviously a lot more affordable than mainstream smartwatch brands, but it does not mean it's all worth it though since it lacks the usual sophisticated health and fitness functions of typical competing devices. But then again, there's really no need for kids to watch their weight, right?
Xiaomi boasts that the best offering comes in the form of the security zone feature. With it, parents can pair it with their smartphones in order to program a daily travel route of their kids, say for instance, from home to school and the neighborhood. But we don't think a lot of kids would feel enthusiastic about this feature, though.
