Xiaomi Redmi 5 Release Date, Specs: Leaked Retail Box Reveals Plus Version

It looks like a Plus version of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is on the way, at least based on a brand-new leak.

An image showing what is believed to be a retail box for the yet-to-be announced Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has popped up on Weibo, seemingly confirming a second superior version of the upcoming handset, which has not been made official by Xiaomi either.

It is unclear what the upgrades will be in this device, but based on the Plus-branded smartphones that Xiaomi put out in the past, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus will get some critical upgrades.

It could end up getting a display larger than the standard model, more random-access memory (RAM) and a bigger battery like the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus from last year. A dual camera setup might also be thrown in there.

For now, what is known about the standard Xiaomi Redmi 5 based on leaks and reports is that it will come with a 5-inch full high-definition (HD) display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor under the hood paired with Adreno 506 and 508 for its graphics processing needs.

The RAM configuration will be at 3 GB and 4 GB while the storage will range from 16 GB all the way to 64 GB, and should even be expandable to 128 GB with a microSD card.

As far as the imaging power goes, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is said to sport a 16 MP primary camera on its rear and a 5 MP selfie snapper on the front. The Plus version could get an upgrade here too, possibly in the form of a second back camera.

The standard Xiaomi Redmi 5 is also apparently getting a fingerprint scanner and fast charging support for its already hefty 3,680 mAh battery. Android 7.1.1 Nougat will be running the show out of the box.

There is no word yet on when the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus will be unveiled, but with a retail box already in the wild, the devices are expected to arrive soon.
