'Young Sheldon' News, Air Date: EP Chuck Lorre Compares Prequel Series to 'The Big Bang Theory'
"Young Sheldon," the prequel series to "The Big Bang Theory," is premiering later this month. But how exactly does it compare to the original?
For one thing, executive producers Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro made sure to set "Young Sheldon" apart from "The Big Bang Theory" by making it a little differently. Unlike its parent series, "Young Sheldon" was not shot in front of a live studio audience, so writing for the single-camera comedy was something new. The actual filming was also different, especially when it came to pacing.
"It's so slow," Lorre told IndieWire in an interview. "A dinner scene where the family is sitting around the table having dinner, that's maybe four pages long. It takes as long as it takes us to shoot an entire episode of 'The Big Bang Theory' in front of an audience. It's unbelievably, torturously slow."
"Young Sheldon" focuses on the childhood of Sheldon Cooper, a fan-favorite role originated by Jim Parsons, who also acts as the prequel series' narrator and executive producer. The titular character is portrayed by Iain Armitage, who is perhaps best known for his work on "Big Little Lies."
Armitage recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times and talked about how he portrays young Sheldon.
"I try to put myself in his shoes," he said. "By the way, his shoes are super awesome. They are the exact kind of shoes I would wear. He's like an awesome person. He has a kindness about him. He's like a floating cloud."
In a special "Critics" promo released, fans were given a closer look at young Sheldon and his family life. He was especially attached to his bow tie and even frantically ran around the house, yelling for his mother's help, when he was unable to find it. The promo particularly focused on reviews from critics, highlighting positive reactions from Variety, the New York Times and Today.
"Young Sheldon" will premiere on Monday, Sept. 25, 8:30 p.m. EDT on CBS.
