'Yu Yu Hakusho' to Return Next Year With New OVA
The anime classic "Yu Yu Hakusho" is making a big return.
Studio Pierrot has revealed at the Jump Festa 2018 event this weekend that an original video animation (OVA) is being made for the franchise and that it will be bundled with an upcoming 25th anniversary Blu-ray Disc box set.
Not much is known yet about the new "Yu Yu Hakusho" animation, but it looks like Yusuke Urameshi, Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama are all coming back in full force soon.
A brainchild of "Hunter x Hunter" creator Yoshihiro Togashi, "Yu Yu Hakusho" is one of the biggest and most popular anime that helped shape the industry as it is today.
The franchise started as a manga published from 1990 to 1994 and in between, the anime, which is celebrating its 25th this year, was made. It was not until 2002 that an English translation of the manga was published by Viz Media for a bigger audience to experience the story.
The new OVA will be the first in almost three decades. The first and only attempts at OVAs for "Yu Yu Hakusho" were released between 1994 and 1996.
If the new animation will be anything like these OVAs, it might see the foursome in another one of their adventures that takes place after the ending of the original series.
Video montages from the anime and satirical animated shorts focusing on the heroes might also be included, but for now, details remain scarce about what the new "Yu Yu Hakusho" OVA will have in store.
"Yu Yu Hakusho" follows the story of the 14-year-old delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after saving a child in a car accident. His death comes as a surprise to the Spirit World, which ends up giving him a second chance at life that he will devote to defeating demons as a "spirit detective." Along the way, he teams up and becomes friends with Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama, making for a formidable ragtag crew.
