Amazon Kindle Fire Conquers Half of the Android Market

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet has conquered over half of the Android market, according to new data collected by the research firm known as ComScore.

The wildly popular tablet accounts for 54.4 percent of the total Android market as of the end of this month.

The Kindle Fire has only been available for six months and it has already blown past high-end Android tablets such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab series that owns 15.4 percent of the market.

Motorola's XOOM line and the ASUS Transformer line together only account for about 14 percent of the Android market.

Amazon offered a cheap alternative to those looking for a tablet. Apple opened up the tablet market by releasing its iPad back in 2010, but the device was not cost effective. However, Apple products seem to sell despite their price tags. The company did not see any real competition until the end of last year when Amazon launched the cost effective Kindle Fire tablet.

The device retails at just $199, while the cheapest version of the iPad costs around $399.

The Kindle Fire runs a custom version of Android 2.3, Gingerbread, making it unique to the Android market.

It also does not hurt that Amazon is the internet's largest merchant. The company has enjoyed much success by offering the tablet at its online store.

In other Amazon news, the company just reported its Q1 earnings. It has grossed $13.18 billion in revenue for the first quarter of 2012, which blew away any analysts original expectations.

However, the company's income was down 35 percent to $130 million. Amazon's net income was $201 million in the first quarter of 2011.

Amazon attributed much of its success to the Kindle line that includes the Kindle Fire tablet.
