Android 4.4.1, KitKat Update Rolls Out for Nexus 5

The Android 4.4.1, KitKat update started rolling out for the Nexus 5 this week.

The upgrade reportedly improves some of the shortcomings of the smartphone's camera.

Dave Burke, Google's Director of Engineering for Android 4.4.1 recently broke down some of the issues users were having with the point and shooter into a few different categories including autofocus, increasing the app's launch speed and the progress indicator in HDR+ mode.

The new software will work to speed up the frame rate and increase the speed of the camera when reading its surroundings to fire off a picture that includes autofocus, exposure and white balance.

The Verge reported that the camera's speed now feels faster across the board with the new update. Burke stated that more interface changes are coming including the addition of a progress indicator in HDR+ mode. The company also hopes to work out a solution to the idea that camera settings are buried under layers of menus and Burke says Google is aiming to improve that in the future.

With the correction of the camera issues, the Nexus 5 should become a lot more appealing.

Specifications on the Nexus 5 include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 processor running at up to 2.3GHz, a 4.96-inch LCD 1080p display, 2GB RAM, Adreno 330 GPU, 16 or 32GB internal memory, a 2300 mAh battery and an 8-megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilization.

The handset is also one of the first devices to run Android 4.4 KitKat.

"For KitKat, we partnered with LG to develop Nexus 5- the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made," wrote Google in the press release. "Its design is simple and refined to showcase the 5 Full HD display."

Unlike its predecessor, the LG Nexus 4, the Google Nexus 5 features LTE connectivity so users could get the most out of the new device's higher-end specs. It also comes with ultra-fast Wi-Fi and improved Bluetooth.
