Angelina Jolie: Maleficent is 'Wonderfully and Deliciously Cruel'

Angelina Jolie opened up about her character in Disney's upcoming film "Maleficent" at the D23 Expo over the weekend.

The Academy Award-winner has not appeared in a film since 2010's "The Tourist," but surprised fans at the Disney event in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday where she talked about "Maleficent."

After sharing a clip from the film with the audience, Jolie revealed that she was thrilled to portray the villainous "Sleeping Beauty" character that curses the infant Princess Aurora in the film.

"I'm so excited to be here," she told ecstatic fans.

"Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite," Jolie added, according to Entertainment Weekly. "I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her. She had this elegance and grace, and yet she was so cruel. Just wonderfully and deliciously cruel."

In the past, Jolie has raved about her costume on the film's set- horns, glowing eyes, jagged cheekbones and ruby red lips.

"I miss them," she said of her horns, according to USA Today. "I love them."

Despite Jolie's admiration for the get-up, her menacing appearance struck a chord with children.

"People with little kids would visit the set, and I would think, 'I'm a Disney character,' so I would go over to them, 'Hi there,'" recounted the actress, according to EW. "They would just scream! One little kid even said, 'Mommy, please make the mean witch stop talking to me.'"

However, Jolie's own children had the opposite reaction. The actress shares six kids with fiancé Brad Pitt, including Vivienne who appears as the young Princess Aurora in "Maleficent."

"Vivienne was the only 4-year-old who didn't scream when she saw me," Jolie laughingly noted, according to EW.

Vivienne has a twin brother Knox as well as older siblings that include Maddox; 11, Pax; 9, Zahara; 8, and Shiloh; 7.

Furthermore, the "Salt" star noted that her children are huge Disney fans.

"My children love Disney," said the actress. "You know you can bring your kids to a Disney film."

"Maleficent" is Disney's half-dragon adaptation of the fairy godmother from the original fairy tale "The Sleeping Beauty" by Charles Perrault. The film also stars Elle Fanning and is due in theaters on July 2, 2014.
