Arnold Schwarzenegger Comes Clean in First Interview Following Affair
Arnold Schwarzenegger has admitted in his first interview since his affair with his family's housekeeper went public that he "inflicted tremendous pain" on his then-wife, Maria Shriver.
In the interview with "60 Minutes," the former Republican governor of California described how his affair affected Shriver and their four children.
"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship," Schwarzenegger, 65, continued. "It was terrible. I inflicted terrible pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids."
As a result of his affair with Mildred Baena who worked in Schwarzenegger's home, the actor fathered a son Joseph, born just days after Schwarzenegger's youngest child with Shriver.
As in the interview with "60 Minutes," Schwarzenegger has not shied away from his scandalous extramarital affair recently, and released his new book, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," which describes the moment he admitted the affair to Shriver in a counseling session.
"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child - whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred," explained Schwarzenegger.
"I told the therapist, 'It's true,'" added the actor.
Also while speaking to "60 Minutes," the one-time Mr. Universe revealed that Shriver "hasn't read anything" from the new autobiography yet.
"She knows that it's about my life and that I would not write a book and leave out that part and make people feel like, 'Well, wait a minute, are we just getting a book about his success stories and not talk about his failures,'" said the actor.
"And that's not the book I wanted to write," he added.
The "60 Minutes" segment with Schwarzenegger is scheduled to air Sunday. The interview promotes the actor's new autobiography, which includes 624 pages describing Schwarzenegger's life from growing up in rural Austria to his career as a politician in California.
