Batman Arkham Origins Villains: There Were 3 Key Factors in Picking the Assassins

Batman Arkham Origins game developers explained why and how they chose the villains for the new game in an interview.

The game's Executive Producer Ben Mattes spoke to OXM about how Batman learned to be the hero he is by defeating the eight assassins that are after him in the game.

"Yeah, so there were three really key factors in making the final list… the DC universe is ripe with people who would kill for money, many of whom would call themselves assassins, many of whom, probably wouldn't, or would never have been necessarily labeled "an assassin," but who have very clearly assassinated and been paid for their assassinations," he said.

Mattes explained that there were three criteria they were looking for when sorting through the bad guys.

The first thing they asked was, "Are they cool?" The second was, "we wanted to make sure we had that diversity," and the third, was the villains abilities versus the gamers skill set. In other words they needed the villain to be challenging and to match the level of the gamer in whatever particular part of the game they were out.

They also felt it was important to get women characters involved in the game to diversify and also to break the conventions of standard video game play.

"I think there's something quite fun about taking that topic, that subject of the role of women in video games and whatnot, and kind of turning it on its head and saying... Batman's going to fight back..." Mattes told OXM.

Another goal of the game according to Gamerant.com is that the developers wanted people to really know the gritty backstory of the Dark Knight. "...We want the player to earn their black belt in being Batman. We want them, by the mid-point in the game, to be (expletive) awesome at this game," he said.

Currently confirmed villains for Batman Arkham Origins are: Black Mask, Deathstroke, The Penguin, Deadshot, Joker, Bane, Anarky, Copperhead, Firefly, Mad Hatter, Lady Shiva, Riddler, and Killer Croc.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be released on Oct. 25 for Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
