Be Aware of Unseen Good and Evil Around You, Dr. Jack Graham Advises (INTERVIEW)
Dr. Jack Graham is the pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church and can often be seen on the Trinity Broadcast Network. He is also the author of "Unseen: Angels, Satan, Heaven, Hell and Winning the Battle for Eternity." Graham spoke with The Christian Post about the importance of being aware of the unseen and how we can win the battle against evil.
CP: Why is it important to be aware of unseen forces both good and evil?
JG: The Unseen, or invisible world, is more real than the visible world. That comes directly from the Scripture; faith is the evidence of things unseen, so there is a world beyond us and around us that we cannot see that is real. Long after the physical world is gone, the spiritual world will exist. I looked around and I saw a lot of superstition: movies regarding the darkness, etc. There's this attention being given to the unseen world by non-believers, yet Christians often do not believe or see it. I take the Bible and examine what God says about the unseen world; I wanted to give people a balanced viewpoint.
Superstition is what people create in their own imagination - even Christians can be fearful because they don't want to get into something so "weird" yet there is a spiritual war going on. Ultimately, I get people to eternity and heaven and hell because we, as believers, want to live heaven-hearted … that our lives matter. The reality of heaven and hell changes your life perspective, so you live with a greater sense of purpose and urgency and meaning.
CP: How can we become more aware of the forces around us?
JG: Be alert. That's a Biblical admonition – the way I stay alert is to study Scripture, pray, and monitor our thought life. I want to fill my life and thoughts with Biblical truth and want to make sure that I am covered in the armor of God, which Paul writes about.
Ultimately, it's alertness to the reality of the battle and the preparedness to have our lives ready so that we're not victims but victors. In Christ, we are victors and have overcome the world. The book of Revelation is full of letters to the victors, the churches and believers. We can engage in battle via prayer, reading Scripture … sometimes in Christianity we forget or refuse to recognize the spiritual battles that are taking place all around us.
CP: How can we win the fight against evil?
JG: I tell the story of when I was a young man, a young preacher preparing for ministry, my father was brutally murdered. As a result, I came face-to-face with darkness and started asking questions about where evil comes from and whether we could do anything about it. Rather than curling up in the fetal position, I decided I would go to war and engage the enemy with the power and love of Christ.
We can look around and ask "What can we do about evil?" and sometimes it seems that we are losing the culture war. We have to stay in the fight and use spiritual weapons, not human weapons, in order to win the fight. This book is very personal to me because I have been able to overcome the evil with good. If we spend all of our days cursing the darkness, we end up losing, but if we share the Gospel, we overcome the darkness and win the victory.
