Beyonce 'Bow Down' Song Draws Criticism From Wendy Williams, Rush Limbaugh
Beyonce Knowles recently sparked controversy over the release of her latest single "Bow Down," and a growing number of critics claim the song's lyrics are anti-feminist.
The song, which has an up-tempo beat and distinct sound, features controversial lyrics which have ultimately divided fans. The often conservative singer has come under fire for what some perceive to be a an oppressive song that is laced with profanity.
"I know when you were little girls / You dreamt of being in my world / Don't forget it, don't forget it / Respect that, bow down b------," Beyonce boasts in the song.
Shortly after the song's release, R&B singer Keyshia Cole blasted Beyonce, 31, as being "self righteous." Within days more high profile critics, including conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and talk show host Wendy William, also condemned the controversial song.
"[Destiny's Child] songs were attempts to inspire young women not to take any grief from men. She's done a 180," said Limbaugh, who is renowned for sparking controversy.
"Beyoncé, now having been married, having been impregnated and giving birth to Blue Ivy … she's got a new song, 'Bow, Down B------' … Beyoncé is now saying, 'Go ahead and put up with it!'" he continued on his radio program adding "You know why? I'll tell you why. Because she married a rich guy (Jay-Z). She's even calling herself Mrs. Carter on the tour … She has shelved Beyoncé … She now understands it's worth it to bow down."
Beyonce, who is currently one of the highest selling pop artists in the world, made her mark in the music industry during the 1990s by singing empowering anthems with girl group Destiny's Child. The married mother of one has also enjoyed great success as a solo artist, but her uncharacteristically offensive song message now has many up in arms.
"If you have to say 'Bow Down' then there's no need to bow down. It's like if you call yourself a diva, then you're not really a diva. There's certain things that don't need to be said," Williams said on her talk-show.
"I mean a few weeks ago she was singing at [President Obama's] Inauguration, then she was performing at the Super Bowl ... you're on a Pepsi can for goodness sake! Then you're saying 'Girls run the world,'" she continued. "Do you ever wonder whether Sasha and Malia [Obama] will be listening to this CD? How do you align yourself with the President and then say [b-----]?
