5 interesting excerpts from the Biden-Hur transcripts
3. Biden calls Africa a country
As Biden faces questions about his mental acuity as he seeks a second term at the age of 81, he referred to the continent of Africa as a country during his conversation with Hur. When Hur asked Biden how long he planned to live in a rented house in McLean, Virginia, following his vice presidency, the president discussed how he had intended to write a book about “what’s happening at that moment” in the arena of foreign policy.
Speaking about the chance to “fundamentally change and make different and more secure” the countries in the Indo-Pacific region, Biden noted that “China’s influence is seeking to be profound” before commenting “Same way in Africa.” Asserting that “we have plenty of people in Africa,” Biden expressed confidence that “we’re going to build the first transcontinental railroad across that country.”
While Australia is both a continent and a country, Africa is a continent made up of many different countries. When Hur interrupted to explain that he wanted to ensure that he had a “fair amount of material,” Biden vowed, “I’m going to stop” as he justified his foreign policy discussion as part of an effort to clarify what he “was thinking about” in terms of his contributions to the “international community” at the time he was pursuing the house in McLean, Virginia.
