Bieber's Anne Frank Comment Stirs More Controversy for Singer
Justin Bieber is facing a new round of criticism after visiting the Anne Frank House and stating that he hoped she "would have been a Belieber," or fan.
Bieber was performing in the Netherlands but took time to visit the Anne Frank House, which has become a museum and shrine to the young Holocaust victim whose diary made her famous around the world and was a testament to the endurance of people during a horrific time.
"Yesterday night, Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank House, together with his friends and guards. Fans were waiting outside to see a glimpse of him. He stayed more than an hour in the museum. In our guestbook he wrote, 'Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber,'" the Anne Frank House wrote on its Facebook page.
People immediately reacted to Bieber's comments with criticism, stating that he should have shown respect to the late Anne Frank and her family, as well as the history of those lost in the Holocaust.
"She would've been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She's an important historical figure so show some respect," posted Kevin Garcia Leon. His comment has received over 2,800 "likes" from Facebook users.
"Pity the guy, after making the effort to visit, wasn't grown up enough to have a break from being so self centered and make a comment like that!" added Steve Landles.
The Anne Frank House, however, described Bieber's visit as "very positive" and said that he "was very interested in the story of Anne Frank and stayed for over an hour. We hope that his visit will inspire his fans to learn more about her life and hopefully read the diary."
Bieber is currently performing in Norway and will return home to wrap up his latest tour.
