Black Friday Sales: Which Are the Most Deal-Obsessed States?

Twitter conducted a tweet analysis to determine which states are most engaged with today’s annual Black Friday, widely regarded as the biggest shopping day of the year.

Social media analysis firm Mashwork analyzed 270,000 tweets from Sept. 26 to Nov. 17, and determined that the states Illinois, California, New York, Texas, and Florida were the most abuzz with the shopping spirit.

California took the consumerist cake with a grand total of 504 Black Friday related conversations. According to the results, men are slightly more interested in Black Friday deals than women at 53 percent.

CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, who has his main offices in Silicon Valley, California, does not understand the buzz around Black Friday:

“Black Friday is stupid, along with people who obsess over it,” Zuckerberg tweeted under the username “ceoMarkZuck” on Thursday evening.

Others, however, hit today’s stores with the same fervor they reserved for their Thanksgiving turkey and mashed potatoes last night.

“Seems like Black Friday is more relevant than Thanksgiving this year,” tweeted username "OluDolt."

As far as retailers are concerned, discount megastore Walmart was the top favorite of sale-crazed tweeters, garnering 21 percent of tweet mentions.

Walmart’s best offers, according to Mashable.com, are predominately on coveted electronics, including the Toshiba 1080 P LCD TV and a Kodak EasyShare Digital Camera bundle.

Best Buy came in a close second, being mentioned in 20 percent of Black Friday-related Twitter conversations.

As of midnight today, stores including Best Buy and Target opened their doors to eager customers, many of whom had been camped out for days prior.

Even unlikely candidates, such as car dealerships, are getting in on the sale hype by offering special lease promotions and discounted prices on new cars.

The Mashwork study revealed that most people are seeking electronics today, such as Apple’s iPad2 and MacBook Pro, and designer shoes, including Polo Ralph Laurens and The North Face sneakers.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is considered to be the official beginning to America’s holiday shopping season. Retailers heavily discount their items to jumpstart holiday revenue, reach remaining quotas and clear out old merchandise for the New Year’s arrivals.
