Bob Welch Dies, Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist's Suicide
Former guitarist and vocalist for Fleetwood Mac Bob Welch died Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 66-year-old was found by his wife at their home in south Nashville, Tennessee around 12:15 p.m. Thursday, according to police spokesperson Son Aaron.
"The police are investigating it as a suicide, and there was no evidence of foul play," said Arron, according to Reuters.
Welch was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1971-1974. When he resigned, the group added members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. It was then that Fleetwood Mac produced four U.S. Top 10 singles including "Dreams" and "Don't Stop."
After his three-year stint with Fleetwood Mac, Welch formed the rock group Paris in 1976. They saw hit songs such as "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes."
The guitarist then went on to write songs and record several hits during his solo career in the 1970s.
In a past interview with The Tennessean in 2003, Welch divulged he never thought his career would come as far as it did.
"I just wanted to play guitar in a good band," said the musician. "I wanted to make the music I loved. I wanted to travel the world and have adventures."
Welch suffered unspecified health problems in recent years, and little is known surrounding his apparent suicide.
Despite his having left Fleetwood Mac, singer in the group Steve Nicks released a statement: "The death of Bob Welch is devastating … I had many great times with him after Lindsey [Buckingham] joined Fleetwood Mac."
"He was an amazing guitar player - he was funny, sweet - and he was smart - I'm so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac - so, so sad," she added.
On Twitter, many users are posting their grief over Welch's death.
"RIP Bob Welch Fleetwood Mac are and will always be one of the greatest bands of all time," wrote Charlie. "Due in no small part to Bob's guitar."
Slash wrote, "RIP Bob Welch. Unfortunate business."
"Rest in Peace Bob Welch… Just read about it," wrote Joe. "So sad… Again a very bad year for musicians."
Welch and his wife had no children. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
