Christafari Bassist/Vocalist To Release Solo Debut July 19th

Avion Blackman, best known for her bass and vocal work with gospel reggae group Christafari, will be releasing her debut CD Onyinye (prounounced Owe-neen-yay) on Lion of Zion Entertainment on July 19th.

The daughter of Ras Shorty I, who is considered to be the inventor of Soca and Jamoo music, Blackman’s sound has been described as “Sade meets Norah Jones with world undertones,” according to Blackman’s website.

Recorded and mixed at Zionic Sounds Dub Lab and mastered at Lion and Fox Studios, Onyinye (which means gift in the Nigerian language Igbo) features music from members of Christafari as well as an all-star cast of the best session players in Los Angeles (including live strings, acoustic guitar, Peruvian pan flute, horns and even turntables). Onyinye contains thirteen brand new tracks penned by Avion, Mark Mohr (front man for Christafari and Blackman’s husband who also produced the album alongside co-producers Solomon Jabby and Avion herself), and other members of Blackman’s family.
