Two improvised explosive devices were discovered attached to one vehicle according to police, the prime minister said.
One of the explosive devices was confirmed to have been disabled and authorities are working to deactivate the other.
Additionally, several guns were discovered at both mosques.
“It is clear that this can only be described as a terrorist attack,” Ardern said in a statement. “From what we know, it does appear to have been well planned.”
Ardern said during a news conference that there is "no place" in New Zealand for this type of violence and called Friday “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.”
