The official synopsis of Episode 2 of season 2 of "The Affair" is brief and reads: "Alison's endemic summer with Noah is interrupted by an unwelcomed guest. Meanwhile, Cole's self-destructive lifestyle has everyone concerned."

Cole Lockhart, played by Joshua Jackson, is a former ranch owner now separated from Alison. He is a Montauk resident and now ferries a cab and is penniless. In an edgy performance, Cole is seen in the promos of the next episode, sitting in a car when his brother, Scotty Lockhart, comes to talk to him about a family crisis. His brother reminds him about their parents and Cole says he doesn't care about his parents and if his brother does not shut up, he plans to run his car over him.

Showtime has released a preview in which Cole follows Alison to New York and in a scene, he is shown standing in the middle of her living room. Alison is shocked by this encounter and she thinks about her life now with Noah.

Joshua Jackson spoke about the complex character of Cole Lockhart in an interview with Collider. He said, "Now when we come back to him in Episode 2, that should, I hope, feel like, "Who is this guy because this doesn't like anything like the man we used to know." Now, you're seeing a person from the inside who is actually riddled with their own insecurities and those big, broad questions of who am I, what purpose do I have in life, who do I want to be, what is my life, and what's my reason."

Episode 2 of Season 2 "The Affair" airs on Sunday, 11 October at 10pm EDT on Showtime.
